South African passports are valid for 10 years and cannot be renewed — when yours expires, you apply for a brand-new one. That distinction matters because it means you go through the full application process each time, not a simple renewal. Here's how to do it without the headache.

When should you apply?

Apply at least three months before your current passport expires. Many countries require a minimum of six months' validity on your passport before they'll let you in, so don't leave it until the last minute. If you have travel booked, apply even earlier.

Documents you need

  • Your valid South African ID or Smart ID Card (or birth certificate if you're a child)
  • Completed DHA-73 application form (available at your Home Affairs office)
  • Your current or expired passport
  • Two recent passport-size photos (40mm x 30mm)
  • Proof of South African citizenship (if applicable)
  • Application fee: R400 for adults, R100 for children under 16

How to apply

  1. Book an appointment at your nearest Department of Home Affairs office via services.dha.gov.za or through the eHomeAffairs portal.
  2. Complete your DHA-73 form before your appointment. Forms are available at the office but completing them in advance saves time.
  3. Attend your appointment with all original documents and certified copies.
  4. Biometrics are captured on-site (fingerprints and photo).
  5. Receive a receipt with your reference number to track the application.
  6. Collect your passport when you receive an SMS notification.

How long does it take?

Standard processing at a South African Home Affairs office takes 4 to 8 weeks. Emergency passports are available for urgent travel, but these require additional documentation and are issued at the DHA's discretion.
