If you're still carrying the old green barcoded ID book, it's time to upgrade. South Africa has been rolling out the Smart ID Card since 2013, and it's now the standard form of identification for citizens and eligible permanent residents. Here's everything you need to know before you go.

What is the Smart ID Card?

The South African Smart ID Card is a credit-card-sized identity document issued by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). It replaces the old green barcoded ID book and carries a microchip with your biometric data. You need it to write matric exams, open a bank account, apply for a passport, register to vote, and much more.

Who can apply?

Any South African citizen or eligible permanent resident aged 16 and older can apply. As of May 2025, naturalised citizens and lawful permanent residents can also apply through the eHomeAffairs platform, which was a long-overdue change.

Documents you need

First-time applicants (ages 16+):

  • Original birth certificate
  • Certified copy of a parent or guardian's ID
  • Proof of residence (if available)
  • Free of charge

Replacing your old green ID book:

  • Your existing green barcoded ID book (or an affidavit if lost)
  • Proof of residence
  • Marriage certificate (if married)
  • Divorce decree (if divorced)
  • Replacement fee: R140

How to apply

  1. Book an appointment via the DHA online booking system at services.dha.gov.za or at a participating bank branch (Absa, FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank).
  2. Attend your appointment with all required documents in hand.
  3. Have your biometrics captured on-site: fingerprints, photo, and signature.
  4. Receive your reference number to track your application online.
  5. Collect your Smart ID Card when notified, usually at the same office where you applied.

How long does it take?

Processing typically takes 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the office and current volumes. Delays are common at busy Home Affairs branches, particularly in Gauteng.
