South African summer beach with golden sand and turquoise ocean

Description

Travelling internationally over December? Here's the South African document checklist you need to complete before the holiday rush — passports, birth certificates, visas and more.

How to prepare your documents for December holiday travel from South Africa

December is South Africa's most popular travel month. It's also when Home Affairs, SAPS and the passport office hit their longest queues. If you're planning international travel over the festive season, your documents need to be sorted months in advance — not weeks.

Table of Contents

Start now, not in November

The single biggest mistake South African travellers make is leaving document renewals too late. Passport renewals take 4 to 8 weeks under normal conditions — and queues in October and November can push that significantly longer.

If you're planning to fly internationally in December, start your document preparation in August or September at the latest.

Passport validity — the rule most travellers miss

Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned arrival date. This means if you're flying to Europe or the USA in December 2026, your passport must be valid until at least June 2027.

Check every passport in your family right now. If any of them expire before mid-2027, book a renewal immediately.

Travelling with children — what you need

South Africa has strict rules around travelling with minors. For international travel, you need:

  • Unabridged Birth Certificate for each child (required at South African immigration and at many international borders)
  • If one parent is travelling alone with a child: an affidavit from the absent parent and their ID copy
  • If a child has a different surname to the travelling parent: additional documentation may be required

Unabridged Birth Certificates take 6 to 8 weeks to process. Don't leave this until the week before your trip.

Visa requirements

South Africans require visas to enter many popular holiday destinations, including the USA, UK, Schengen zone (Europe), Canada and several Asian countries.

Visa applications often require:

  • Your original SA passport (which means you cannot travel while it is being processed)
  • A Police Clearance Certificate in some cases
  • Bank statements, travel itineraries and proof of accommodation
  • Sufficient passport blank pages (typically 2 to 3 clear pages minimum)

Check the visa requirements for your destination at least 3 months before travel.

Driver's licence for rental cars

If you plan to rent a car abroad, you'll need:

  • A valid South African driver's licence
  • An International Driver's Permit (IDP) — available from the AA of South Africa
  • Some countries require a certified translation of your licence
