What is an Unabridged Marriage Certificate?

An Unabridged Marriage Certificate is a full, detailed marriage certificate issued by the Department of Home Affairs. It includes the full details of both spouses — names, identity numbers, dates of birth, nationalities, and parents' details — and carries an official Home Affairs seal.

The shorter Abridged version only shows limited information and is not accepted for most official purposes abroad.

When do you need one?

You'll need an Unabridged Marriage Certificate for:

The Unabridged Marriage Certificate is a separate, more detailed document issued by Home Affairs. It is the version required for almost all legal, immigration and official purposes.

  • Both spouses' original South African IDs or passports
  • Original Abridged Marriage Certificate (the one from your wedding day)
  • Completed BI-130 application form (available at Home Affairs)
  • Application fee: R75 per certificate

If you were previously married: your original Divorce Decree or Death Certificate of former spouse is required.

How to apply

  2. Submit your application at the counter. Both spouses' details are verified against the national population register.
  3. Pay the R75 fee and receive a receipt with a reference number.
  4. Collect or receive your certificate when Home Affairs notifies you by SMS.
