Your driver's licence card needs to be renewed every five years, and the clock starts ticking four weeks before the expiry date. Miss that window and you'll be driving on an expired licence — which is an offence — and you'll need a temporary licence at extra cost while you wait.

When to renew

Renew at least four weeks before your card's expiry date. Check the date printed on the back of your pink card — it reads DD/MM/CCYY. If your licence has already expired, apply for a temporary driving licence on the same day you visit the DLTC.

What you need

  • Your original South African ID or Smart ID Card, plus a certified copy
  • Your current driver's licence card
  • A completed LL2 application form (available at the DLTC)
  • An eye test done at the DLTC, or a report from a registered optometrist
  • Payment: renewal fee applies (confirm the current amount at your DLTC)

New 2025 requirements for drivers over 40

From November 2025, drivers aged 40 and older must submit a current eye test certificate with each renewal application. Drivers with certain medical conditions must also submit a medical fitness certificate from their doctor. This is a permanent change, not a once-off requirement. If your eyesight has deteriorated since your last licence was issued, new conditions may be added to your licence.

How to renew

  1. Book your appointment at a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) via the National Traffic Information System online booking service or by phone.
  2. Gather your documents (see the list above).
  3. Attend your appointment. No driving test is required. You'll complete an eye test and have your fingerprints taken.
  4. Submit your application and pay the renewal fee.
  5. Receive a temporary licence if your current card expires while you wait.
  6. Collect your new licence card when notified. Printing and delivery typically takes several weeks.

How long does it take?

Standard processing takes 4 to 8 weeks. DLTC queues are among the longest in government services — arriving early or booking an appointment through a facilitation service makes the process significantly faster.
